"Excellent resource! We are using this for a federal research study involving training older adult nursing home residents how to use the computer internet and email.”
“I've found these to be great as an introduction to computers and the Internet for young indigenous people in the Centre of Australia. The clear and recognizable images and repetition make it straight-forward for young people doing self-directed learning for the first time online.”
“CAAELLI materials were beneficial documents to a few schools in Belize. Thank you for creating and freely distributing them.”
“The ACTION curriculum is wonderful! There are so few resources for students with very low literacy skills but your lessons are effective & unintimidating.”
“This program was very useful when I started teaching a computer literacy class for ESL students at a low literacy level.”

Active Citizens
Technology in Our Neighborhoods (ACTION) Curriculum
VIDEO! ---- Click here to watch the story of Bertin and Felicitas Ayala,
immigrant parents of two Marines serving in Iraq, as they learn English and e-mail so they can stay in touch with their sons. An example of how the ACTION classes have helped changed lives.
The CAAAELII Technology
Project has developed a simple-language, low-literacy computer
curriculum called Active Citizens Technology In Our Neighborhoods
(ACTION). The 16
computer lessons guide students from identifying basic hardware
to sending attachment using their own Yahoo e-mail account. The materials have been available free to download since 2004. In that time, users report ACTION has proven helpful for seniors, ESL students (SPL 2,3,4), nursing home residents, adults with limited reading skills, at-risk youth, and others.
This free, downloadable curriculum
provides presentation (PowerPoint) materials for teachers as well as free software for students to develop their mouse and typing skills (GoMouse, TuxTyping, Typing Master Demo). If preprinted lessons are needed, they are available for a fee (see bottom of page).
ACTION's curriculum development has been funded by the Polk Brothers Foundation. Chicago-area ACTION classes have been funded by the Refugee and Immigrants Citizenship Initiative (RICI) through the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). Over 1500 students worldwide have been taught these lessons thanks to these and other generous funders.
A sample of CAAAELII's ACTION Curriculum
is available to view without registering. A typical ACTION lesson includes two downloads: a PowerPoint Presentation and a booklet for Teacher / Student use, as found by clicking below.
These files are compressed for quicker downloads. If you do not have compression software such as WinZip or WinRAR or WindowsXP, you can download WinZip's free software
evaluation. The presentation files can be displayed for personal or classroom viewing using the free PowerPoint Viewer provided by Microsoft at www.microsoft.com.
